RF or traditional? Microneedling, compared.

Both treatments use fine needles to encourage collagen. The difference is what happens beneath the surface — and which concerns each one suits.

The shared idea

Both start with micro-channels.

Traditional microneedling and RF microneedling both use a device with very fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. Your skin repairs those channels, and that repair process encourages new collagen over the weeks that follow.

Where they differ is that RF microneedling adds radiofrequency heat, delivered through the needle tips into the deeper dermis — the layer where collagen and elastin are made.

Side by side

What each is usually discussed for.

Traditional microneedling works through the needles alone, with no added heat. It is usually discussed for overall texture, dullness, glow and shallower textural concerns, with a short recovery.

RF microneedling adds heat beneath the surface. It is usually discussed when the goals include skin laxity along the jawline or neck, or deeper acne scarring, and it may be considered for a wider range of skin tones.

Neither is automatically better. The right choice depends on your skin, your concerns and how much recovery time you can plan for.

Recovery

Similar recoveries, different depths.

Both treatments usually involve short-lived redness and sensitivity afterwards, and both are planned as a course of sessions rather than a single visit, because collagen builds gradually.

Your provider explains the expected recovery for the treatment they recommend before you book, and reviews your skin at each visit.

Choosing

The consultation decides.

At GoWell, the choice between traditional microneedling and RF microneedling is made in person, after your provider has seen your skin and heard what you want to change. If scarring is your main concern, our acne scar treatment page explains how the options compare.

Questions

Common questions.

Is RF microneedling better than traditional microneedling?

Neither is automatically better. Traditional microneedling suits overall texture and shallower concerns; RF microneedling adds heat beneath the surface and is usually discussed for laxity or deeper scarring. Your provider recommends one after seeing your skin.

Does RF microneedling have more downtime?

Both usually involve short-lived redness and sensitivity. Your provider explains the expected recovery for the treatment they recommend before you book.

How many sessions will I need with either treatment?

Collagen builds gradually, so a course of sessions is usually discussed rather than a single visit. Your provider sets the number and spacing after assessing your skin.

How much do these treatments cost?

Current prices for traditional and RF microneedling, including packages, are listed on our pricing page. Your provider confirms your plan at your consultation.
