How it works

Diode laser, explained.

A diode laser sends light into the hair follicle, where the pigment in the hair absorbs it and converts it to heat. That heat disables the follicle's ability to regrow hair, while the surrounding skin is left alone. Because the laser targets pigment, settings are adjusted to your skin tone and hair colour — which is why we start with an assessment rather than a preset.

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only disable follicles that are actively growing. That's why treatment is planned as a course of sessions spaced apart, rather than a single visit. Your provider sets the number and spacing for your skin and hair, reviews progress at each visit, and talks through maintenance once your course is complete.

Preparation

Getting ready for your session.

Shave the treatment area before your appointment so the laser can reach the hair at the root. Avoid waxing or plucking between sessions, because those remove the root the laser needs to target — shaving is fine. Avoid sun exposure and tanning around your visits, and tell your provider about any medications or skin changes.
