CO₂ laser or RF? Resurfacing, compared.
Both treatments encourage collagen for texture, scarring and signs of aging. They work differently, and the recovery is different too.
Energy from above, or from within.
Fractional CO₂ laser resurfaces the skin from above. The laser fires thousands of tiny columns into the skin and leaves untouched skin between them, and those bridges of healthy tissue support healing while the dermis below rebuilds.
RF microneedling works from within. Fine needles create micro-channels and release radiofrequency heat into the deeper dermis, without resurfacing the skin's surface in the same way.
Different concerns, different tools.
CO₂ laser resurfacing is usually discussed for more established concerns: wrinkles, sun damage and textured acne scarring. It is not right for every skin type, which is why it always starts with an in-person assessment.
RF microneedling is usually discussed for skin laxity along the jawline and neck, deeper acne scarring and texture, and it may be considered for a wider range of skin tones.
The biggest practical difference.
Recovery is where the two differ most. RF microneedling usually involves short-lived redness. CO₂ resurfacing involves a longer period of visible healing that you plan around, with pinkness that settles over the weeks that follow.
Your provider explains the expected timeline for the treatment they recommend before you book, so you can plan around work and events.
Assessed in person, every time.
The choice between CO₂ laser resurfacing and RF microneedling depends on your skin type, the concern, and how much downtime you can plan for. At GoWell, that decision is made at a consultation — never from a menu. If scarring is your main concern, our acne scar treatment page explains how all the options compare.

Common questions.
Which is better for acne scars, CO₂ laser or RF microneedling?
It depends on the type and depth of your scars and your skin type. CO₂ resurfacing can soften the edges of textured scars but is not right for every skin type. RF microneedling is often discussed for deeper scarring and may suit a wider range of skin tones. Your provider assesses your scars in person.
Which has more downtime?
CO₂ resurfacing involves a longer period of visible healing that you plan around. RF microneedling usually involves short-lived redness. Your provider explains the expected timeline before you book.
Can I have both treatments?
Some plans combine approaches over time, but the right sequence depends on your skin. Your provider recommends a plan at your consultation.
